The new syllabuses are now available on the NSW Curriculum. Schools can plan and prepare to teach the new K–6 syllabuses from 2025. The new syllabuses will be implemented in NSW schools in 2027.

K–2 focus areas

The focus areas for each stage support students’ growing knowledge and understanding in the areas of:

  • Oral language and communication

  • Vocabulary

  • Phonological awareness

  • Print conventions

  • Phonic knowledge

  • Reading fluency

  • Reading comprehension

  • Creating written texts

  • Spelling

  • Handwriting

  • Understanding and responding to literature​

3–6 focus areas

The focus areas for each stage support students’ growing knowledge and understanding in the areas of:

  • Oral language and communication

  • Vocabulary

  • Reading fluency

  • Reading comprehension

  • Creating written texts

  • Spelling

  • Handwriting and digital transcription

  • Understanding and responding to literature​

7–10 focus areas

The focus areas for each stage support students’ growing knowledge and understanding in the areas of:

  • Reading, viewing and listening to texts

  • Understanding and responding to texts

  • Expressing ideas and composing texts
